Meet the Crew - No Limits Style

Here they are, the complete crew of Holden Salvage in all their No Limits glory. It took about four times longer to get them to format properly for posting than it did to build the profiles. And frankly I'm still not happy with the formatting but it will have to do.

Getting Started

I now have the latest and greatest version of No Limits printed and bound and I will start working on the stats and gear for Holden and his crew. I'll also be starting to create the RPG-like rules that I will need to add to No Limits to make this work. I had originally planned on using the 5150 game for this since it has great RPG-like rules. But it's actual combat mechanics, though original and unique, were just not fun to play for me.

Luckily I got some great ideas for this kind of thing from a guy known as Ironworker on the No Limits forum. He's doing a similar narrative campaign (though not solo and in the pulp genre) using the No Limits rules and has already done some cool stuff to make it work.

Hopefully I will have detailed stats and at least some extra rules ready in the next few days. Then it will be time to tackle that critical mission on Sirrus 3 that Mr. X is wanting done.

The Beginning of the End

I don't know why he picked me, I really don't. At first it was easy money. They were tests obviously. Like I cared. But then again, as the jobs got harder the rewards got bigger. I remember the first time like it was yesterday and it’s been the same every time. Some courier would show up with a letter about the mission and maybe even some containers with some pretty juicy gear that somehow he knew we would need for the job he wanted done.

Him. He. Mr. X as we call him. Who the hell knows who he really is. Frankly I don’t care anymore. Because of him my little company is a bit bigger and a whole hell of lot richer and better equipped. And this time it was most certainly the same, a courier from a local company with a letter and three crates.

I always read the letter first. Call me superstitious, but I wasn’t going to open the three crates he included without knowing what the hell was going on first.

Dear, Dear Frank,

I hope this letter sees you well my dear boy. This time I have another job for you and believe me when I say that this will be the most difficult task I have ever called on you to accomplish. I wish I had another alternative, but I’m afraid my back is against the wall here.

But enough doom and gloom. Knowing you as I do I’m sure you are reading this thoroughly before you dare open those precious crates so I will save you the suspense. I trust JB (as you have come to call him) has worked out well for you? He should be even more of an asset now.

Crate 1 – GrayMatter Robotics L5 Combat Processing sub-unit.

I believe Zeek is your computer man. I think you will find that this should fit him perfectly.
Crate 2 - Caterpillar Tractor Armored Division; MicroTitan Exo-Armor with integrated VenSys R970 DSD-MS Field Operations Computer.

And of course I would hate for Zak to feel left out, you know how twins can be. Jealousy is so much worse with that spiritual bond.
Crate 3 – Caterpillar Tractor Armored Division; MicroTitan Exo-Armor with integrated Future Arms G74 Auto Laser.

As usual, by the time you are done reading this your “fee” will have already been deposited to your account. I’m sure it will give you pause when you see two million credits are now yours. Don’t worry about it calling any attention to you, I’ve already taken care of everything.

You’re probably asking yourself “What the hell have I gotten myself into.” As I already mentioned, this is not going to be an easy one. In fact, this time our arrangement has an actual option for you. That is, for you to not go. Yes, you read that right. If after you have read this you decide you can’t go through with it then all you have to do is put this letter in your shredder. You can even keep the money and equipment. Of course I would not be able to call upon you again from that point on, but I can't in all good conscious force this mission upon you. However, before you make that decision I want you to know that I believe you can accomplish this task. It’s a task that must be accomplished. Its importance cannot be overstated. It may seem melodramatic, but the truth is that many innocent lives are at risk and that risk grows the longer this mission waits.

I’m sure you recall that many of the tasks you have done for me in the past have, at some level, involved a super-corporate known as Krieg Aerospace. Good old Dagwood Krieg is not, of course, the benevolent CEO and Philanthropist that his image portrays. But more of that when the time comes. For now I believe that one of Krieg’s isolated high security communication facilities holds a key piece to one of his larger and much darker plots. The details are sketchy at best and I’m not going to lead you down a wrong path by speculating needlessly.

What we need is for you to enter the Sirrus Deep Space Communication facility and download the contents of their computer network to the VenSys DSD. It’s a special version developed for us for operations of this type and so it has all the capabilities that Zeek will need to accomplish the task. The facility is on the Dandor peninsula on Sirrus 3, deep in the woods. Besides the usual Krieg rent-a-cops we believe the primary facility to be protected by at least one squad of Krieg’s “secret” combat troops, his self-vaunted "Legionaries". It is highly likely that they will have at least some advanced military weapons but we believe that Krieg feels the isolated location on a backwater planet is the facilities best security feature. After all Krieg has hundreds of comm centers throughout the galaxy, no one would think this one any different.

So, get in, get the info and get out. Use whatever means necessary, just get it done, and the sooner the better. Oh, and be sure and take JB along, I have a suspicion he will be needed.

Yours Truly

It usually makes me laugh, reading that ridiculous “Yours Truly” with no name attached. But this time I just didn’t find it funny. This was serious. Sure he’d given us some good stuff in the past, weapons, ammo, hard body armor, a nice computer upgrade and of course our trusty JobBot 1700, good old JB. But two suits of exo-armor? A friggin’ auto laser? Not to mention a DSD clearly beyond even Zeek’s wildest dreams. He’d always paid us good too, but two million creds is beyond anything I could even imagine, and on the up. No, this was way past serious.

He knew I was going to do the job. There was no question in his mind any more than there was a question in mine. The option to back out was just his way of being polite I think. The fact is that for some reason I trust this guy. And he, whoever he is, clearly trusts me. If he think it’s really that important then so do I.

Sirrus 3. It’s only a few days away using Dignity. I guess I better get Sheila to start prepping her for the trip.

Meet the Crew

Holden Salvage has over 50 years of collective experience in the salvage and recovery industry. Our diverse team can tackle any challenge with a spectrum of the necessary knowledge to get the job done and done right.

Frank Holden - Owner and Chief Salvage & Recovery Specialist
Frank is 37 years old with almost two decades of experience in salvage and recovery. Including ten years in the Federal Navy as an Engineering Recovery Specialist. Frank rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7) before leaving to start Holden Salvage.

Frank will be my main character obviously. He has Hard Body armor (thanks to Mr. X) and a laser pistol (a gift from Admiral Zed Cane (CnC of Fleet Recovery Group) when Frank left the Navy). He also has an old jump jet pack that he and Chub modified to fit his armor.

As I get everything worked out for No Limits, I will post each characters stats.

Chub Daniels - Senior Salvage & Recovery Specialist
Chub is 32 years old and has been with Holden since the beginning. He served with Frank all six years of his Federal Navy career also as an Engineering Recovery Specialist.

Chub has Soft Body armor (he doesn't like the constricting nature of the Hard Body armor that Mr. X gave them) and has a SAW also courtesy of Mr. X. Chub is actually a mutant though only he and Frank (and likely Mr. X) know that for fact. He has an almost toad like face and sickly greenish tint to his skin. However he is also big and bulky and has a temperament that ensures that no one gives him a second look. If they value their lives anyway. Chub is Franks best friend and right hand man. They have been through a lot together and each would gladly give their life for the other.

Zak Swift - Salvage & Recovery Specialist
Zak is 23 years old and what he lacks in experience he makes up with a single minded dedication to accomplishing the mission. Zak does what it takes and that can-do attitude has made him an integral part of Holden Salvage.

Zak has Exo armor that includes an integrated Auto Laser (details in an upcoming post). Zak is one of the "Z Brothers" as Frank calls them, with the other being Zeek (see below). They are twin brothers and both are usually a pain in the ass for Frank. But they do their jobs very well despite their oddities and besides, Mr. X recommended them to Frank so they must be good for something.

Zeek Swift - Computer & Electronics Specialist
Zeek is also 23 years old being Zak's twin brother. He received a degree in Computer Science from Jesibel Technology University and provides Holden Salvage with the critical know how for complex salvage operations involving computer and electronic systems.

Zeek also has Exo armor. However, he carries a standard Assault Rifle as his armor has a special built in computer. The other of the "Z Brothers" Zeek is, despite his higher IQ and education, a bit less reliable than his older brother Zak. But when it comes to getting a job done, like Zak he puts his nose to the grind stone.

Sheila Richardson - Transportation Specialist
Sheila is a 29 year old with a passion for motion. Cars, trains, planes, starships. She loves them all and she knows them all well. When it comes time to move that salvage from point A to point B, Sheila makes it happen. Sheila also served in the Federal Navy as a Transport Specialist for for four years, two of them with Frank and Chub.

Sheila has Hard Body armor and Laser Carbine (all of course thanks to Mr. X).

Jim Wilkons - Security Specialist
Jim is a 42 year old Federal Navy Fleet Marine Force veteran. Jim has been there and done that and has extensive experience providing top board security both in the Fleet Marine Force and out and he has the medals and commendations to prove it. Jim ensures that our clients critical salvage gets into their hands safe and sound.

Jim has Hard Body armor and an Assault Rifle.

JB - JobBot 1700
Oh sure, most companies have a JobBot of some kind, but JB is a special part of Holden Salvage. A gift from an especially grateful client, JB helps us get the job done and despite him being a non-sentient robot, we are thankful to him for that.

JB is a robot with exo armor equivalent. He is unable to use ranged weapons but his two lifting claws are now deadly weapons thanks to the GrayMatter combat subsystem upgrade from Mr. X. While he isn't truly sentient he is no ordinary JobBot since he has considerable autonomous capability.

This is just the beginning. I plan on adding more detail to each character as time goes on, revealing more background and possibly changing things for them if needed.

Holden Salvage

Holden Salvage was founded in 3927 by Frank Holden. After ten years in the Federal Navy as an Engineering Recovery Specialist Frank decided it was time to strike out on his own and Holden Salvage was born.

Holden Salvage prides itself in accomplishing any salvage or recovery requirement no matter how large, no matter how difficult. Including galactic transport. We have the expertise and gear to do the job on spec, on time and on budget.

Holden Salvage headquarters are located on Jesibel 3. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have or for a free services quote. Just comm to JSB3-02347-648291.

Frank Holden is my main character for a solo campaign using Wargames Unlimited's free No Limits rules. This blog is meant to be a simple narrative journal for my games using Holden and his motley gang of salvage goons as they take on not only standard missions (of both legal and dubious natures) but also any of the "special" missions from the mysterious "Mr. X".

I plan on photographing the games and writing battle reports which will also be published here. This will serve not only to journal the campaign but also my progress on painting the miniatures involved and the creation and painting of terrain.

Because of the narrative nature, most posts will be episodic. Yeah I know, this whole thing is cheesy. But I don't care, it's fun.
